Video outpainting, crop or padding?

These methods solve different problems. Choose based on whether you can remove part of the frame, accept empty space or need generated surroundings.

01

Is outpainting the same as video extension?

Video outpainting extends the image beyond its frame. Time extension adds new moments before or after a clip. Cropping removes edges, while letterboxing adds solid bars without generating scenery. Our tool handles spatial outpainting of a short clip with a fixed output duration. It does not lengthen a story, preserve every source pixel or restore missing original footage.

Compare a frame around 2.5 seconds

These JPEGs were extracted from the displayed MP4s on October 9, 2026. They retain the complete frame: no retouching, AI enhancement or concealed cropping. The different frame rates mean this is an approximate time comparison, not a pixel-aligned difference measurement.

Use bars when preservation matters most, crop when unused edges can go, and outpaint when generated space is acceptable.

04

Avoid paying for the wrong kind of extension

If you want a ten-second clip from a five-second source, you need time extension. This workspace outputs a fixed 121-frame sequence; it is not a duration-extension tool.

If you need perfectly unchanged text, logos or evidence footage, use a conventional editor with padding or crop. Outpainting is a creative transformation that needs human review.

Prepare an outpainting prompt, or open the processing workspace when new surroundings are the right solution.

05

Choose from the delivery requirement

A portrait ocean shot with useful detail across its width may suit generated space above and below. Inspect our landscape-to-portrait example and decide whether its altered scenery is acceptable for your edit.

A product recording with lettering that must stay exact has a different requirement. Put the original inside a wider canvas, or crop only expendable areas. The unbranded bottle outpainting sample does not validate retail labels.

For an action shot, background continuity alone is insufficient. If outpainting changes the moving subject, the extra canvas has not solved your delivery problem. The moving-horse review shows what to inspect.

If the brief asks for more time rather than more image area, choose a duration-editing workflow. A video repeating inside a wider canvas is not evidence that an original event was recovered or accurately continued.

06

Choosing a method

What changes the source pixels least?

Padding or placing the source on another canvas can keep the original image region unchanged in a conventional edit. Cropping removes some of it; generative outpainting may change detail inside it.

Is “video extension” always outpainting?

No. Some tools use extension to mean generating additional time after a clip. Here outpainting refers to spatial regions outside the original frame.

Does resizing create missing scene content?

Ordinary resizing changes dimensions; cropping, padding and stretching are different ways to fit the result. They do not recover unseen real surroundings.

Should I pay for outpainting if black bars are acceptable?

A conventional canvas edit may already meet that brief. Use generative expansion when added scenery is useful and you can review its imperfections.

07

Evidence behind the comparison

The fal outpainting API defines spatial canvas expansion. Our fixed preset and three recorded samples define the narrower options offered here. Cropping and padding describe conventional editing operations; no paid comparison test or numerical quality ranking is claimed.

Choose your next step

Prepare the file with the MP4 input guide, then inspect the fixed output budget, silent audio and preservation limits.

For a specific source, review the product example or moving-subject example. Processing and the 70-credit quote appear in the Wan3Prime workspace.

09

Check the evidence behind these examples

Inspect the source videos, returned files and full-frame test extracts. The public methodology identifies the preset, individual jobs, publisher and observations so you can review the evidence directly.
