# Landscape video to portrait, with new surroundings.

> A 16:9 source fitted inside a portrait canvas needs new space above and below. The model fills that space instead of cutting the sides away.

## How does landscape-to-portrait outpainting work?

The source video is fitted into a taller canvas, then a model generates missing image regions over a sequence of frames. This can retain the broad original composition better than a portrait crop, but it is still a generative edit. Watch for changing rocks, altered subjects and unstable edges rather than assuming every original pixel survived.

## Volcanic shoreline: source and outpainted result

Play both complete clips. The source is AI-generated footage from our own published library, not a customer case or camera recording. Source clips contain generated audio; the outpainted results are silent. These are individual jobs, not a success-rate benchmark.

## Compare a frame around 2.5 seconds

These JPEGs were extracted from the displayed MP4s on October 9, 2026. They retain the complete frame: no retouching, AI enhancement or concealed cropping. The different frame rates mean this is an approximate time comparison, not a pixel-aligned difference measurement.

## Three recorded outpainting results

Our own generated source footage was processed through the same app preset used by the workspace. This is an actual result, not a mockup.

### Ocean: landscape source to portrait output
Recorded output: 704×1280, about 5.04 seconds, silent. The sky and foreground continue throughout the shot. Generative edits can change detail in the source region; this sample does not establish exact preservation.
- Prompt: Extend the existing ocean scene naturally above and below the frame. Continue the dusk sky and volcanic shoreline. Keep the original waves and rocks consistent. No people, logos, text or new objects.
- Settings: video to video, 5.04 s, 9:16, 720p, sound off
- Generated: 2026-10-07 (provider request 01a118a1-83a3-7ba0-a852-afab3d917b72)

### Product: portrait source to landscape output
1280×704, about 5.04 seconds, silent. The dark setting extends on both sides; drops move through the shot. Fine bottle detail and reflections still require inspection. [Source footage](https://wan3prime.com/media/perfume-drops.mp4).
- Prompt: Extend the existing dark product scene naturally to the left and right. Continue the wet black stone and dark background. Keep the original unbranded perfume bottle and its motion centered. No new products, logos, text or people.
- Settings: video to video, 5.04 s, 16:9, 720p, sound off

### Motion test: horse on a beach
704×1280, about 5.04 seconds, silent. The horse remains visible across the shot, but rounded dark corners and soft foreground are visible. We retain those artifacts in this unedited sample. [Source footage](https://wan3prime.com/media/beach-horse.mp4).
- Prompt: Extend the misty beach environment naturally above and below the existing footage. Keep the white horse, tracking movement, horizon and hoof motion consistent. No additional animals, people, logos or text.
- Settings: video to video, 5.04 s, 9:16, 720p, sound off

## What to check in the ocean result

The recorded output is 704×1280 at 24 fps, about 5.04 seconds, with no audio track. The expanded sky and dark foreground are visible across the shot. The supplied source was a landscape ocean clip generated by our team.

The scene stays plausible in this sample, but that is not proof that text, fine product detail or faces will be preserved. Scrub the beginning, middle and end before using an output commercially.

For tall composition, tell the model what should continue above and below: the same sky, floor, shoreline or studio backdrop. Avoid asking for an unrelated new object. [Read the prompt guide](https://videooutpainting.com/video-outpainting-prompts).

## Expand a video in four steps

1. **Open the processing workspace** Use your Wan3Prime account. [Open video outpainting](https://wan3prime.com/video-outpainting). Accounts and credits are shared with its other supported tasks.
2. **Upload a short MP4** Use a trimmed clip up to 5 seconds and 4 MB. The source preview shows its dimensions. Choose a different output shape: landscape or portrait.
3. **Describe the missing surroundings** Describe the background and lighting that should continue outside the frame. Review the fixed 70-credit quote before submitting. If needed, buy credits and return to this workspace.
4. **Review and download** Watch the original and result, inspect the beginning and end for flicker or distorted subjects, then download the silent MP4. Failed processing returns credits automatically.

## Portrait output questions

### Can I make a tall video without cutting off the sides?

That is the intended reframing task: fit the source into a portrait canvas and generate missing surroundings. The model can still change source detail, so inspect the actual result.

### Can this workflow produce Reels or Shorts source footage?

It can produce a short portrait MP4 for you to edit. It does not publish to a social platform, create captions, preserve source audio or check a platform’s current delivery requirements.

### Why is the sample 704×1280 rather than 720×1280?

Those are the actual encoded dimensions returned for the recorded portrait samples. Nominal 720p is the provider tier selected by the preset, not a promise of a specific pixel width.

### What if I only want to crop to portrait?

Use a conventional editor when a crop is sufficient. Read the method comparison before paying for generated regions you do not need.

## Choose your next step

Prepare the file with the [MP4 input guide](https://videooutpainting.com/prepare-mp4-for-video-outpainting), then inspect the [fixed output budget, silent audio and preservation limits](https://videooutpainting.com/video-outpainting-limitations).

For a specific source, review the [product example](https://videooutpainting.com/video-outpainting-product-videos) or [moving-subject example](https://videooutpainting.com/video-outpainting-moving-subjects). Processing and the 70-credit quote appear in the [Wan3Prime workspace](https://wan3prime.com/video-outpainting).

## Check the evidence behind these examples

Inspect the [source videos, returned files and full-frame test extracts](https://videooutpainting.com/video-outpainting-test-methodology). The public methodology identifies the preset, individual jobs, publisher and observations so you can review the evidence directly.
